Dentures Q&A

Why are dentures necessary?

Full dentures replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Partial dentures replace several missing teeth in one arch. Dentures restore your smile and prevent the sagging of facial muscles that happens when you’re missing teeth. Also, more importantly they restore chewing function. Chewing food properly is the first step in food digestion and your gut will be much healthier!

The latest models of dentures offered at Healing Dentistry match your natural tooth and gum coloration to look as real as possible.

What kinds of dentures are offered?

Dentures come in several forms, including:

Conventional dentures:

These consist of a base that suctions to your gums and artificial teeth that fit into the spaces left by missing natural teeth. Conventional dentures provide an affordable option for high-quality teeth replacement.

Implant-supported dentures:

Implant-supported dentures fit onto dental implants. Dental implants can be traditional titanium implants or ceramic implants anchored into your jawbone. We do prefer ceramic implants because they are biocompatible with our body (check out our implants page for more information). However, traditional implants are available.

Implant supported dentures can be:

– Removable dentures which can be removed for cleaning and snapped back into the place, or

– Fixed dentures, also called ‘porcelain bridge dentures’ which stay fixed permanently in place. Maintenance is very important. Fixed dentures must be removed for cleaning once a year, or if the patient has exceptionally good oral hygiene, every 2-3 years.

Partial dentures :

Partial dentures are removable and they are replacing only missing teeth. Partials can also be metal free and are called Flexylite partials.

Dr. Mitic will take into consideration your oral health history, lifestyle, and personal preferences to determine which kind of denture/partials is the best for you.

Special customization of dentures: any kind of dentures and partials you choose should represent your vision of an ideal smile. At Healing Dentistry we can customize any prosthesis to your vision. We can add gold teeth, gold teeth with a design, or tooth gems. Check out our Instagram for some amazing cases.

What is it like to wear dentures?

Conventional dentures can feel loose or awkward at first. It can take time for your cheeks and tongue muscles to become accustomed to their placement. Some people have minor irritation or soreness when first wearing dentures, but these problems diminish with time.

You might need to change your diet as some foods are harder to eat when you have dentures. The Healing Dentistry providers give you tips and recommendations as you adjust.

Implant-supported dentures don’t slip and take less time to adjust to.

Dentures will restore the look of your smile and face. Many people find that dentures can fill out their facial features and improve their appearance.

How do I care for dentures?

You’ll need to maintain good oral care, even with dentures. Brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth before inserting conventional or removable implant-supported dentures.

You should brush your dentures daily too. If they’re removable, rinse them with warm water and use a hard-bristled toothbrush with denture soap to clean all the surfaces. Rinse your mouth as well. Store your dentures as directed when they aren’t being worn.
